Eric Weiner besteedt in zijn boek "Geography of Genius" twee hoofdstukken aan Wenen. Dit citaat toont goed zijn bewondering aan voor deze stad: "De gouden eeuw van Wenen was langer en dieper dan enig andere. Het ware in feite twee verschillende gouden eeuwen. Eerst, ongeveer rond 1800, bracht een muzikale bloei ons Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert , en het wunderkind Mozart. En een eeuw later raakte een veel bredere explosie van genialiteit elk denkbaar gebied - wetenschap, psychologie, kunst, literatuur, architectuur, filosofie en nogmaals muziek. Freud, dominaarde met zijn eclectische interesses en confessionele bank de laatste eeuw. Mozart, de eerste.
