De term wordt gebruikt door de Oostenrijkse Alpenvereniging in zijn classificatie van de Oostalpen als een van de 24 subgroepen van de Noordelijke Kalkalpen.
De twee afzonderlijke toppen van Grimming en Sarstein werden als onderdeel van de Dachstein-groep gerekend omdat beide zijn afgebroken van het Dachstein-kalksteenblok, ondanks dat ze vanuit een hydrografisch en orografisch perspectief behoorlijk apart zijn. Deze classificatie verscheen al in 1924 in de Moriggl-divisie van de Alpen.
