In de 11de eeuw bouwde Waleraan, de eerste graaf van Aarlen, een burcht boven op de heuveltop. Deze wordt, evenals de stadswallen, in 1558 verwoest door de Franse hertog De Guise. In 1621 vestigen de Kapucijnen zich in Aarlen en bouwden een klooster en een kerk op de ruïnes van het kasteel. In 1681 wordt de heuveltop verbouwd als bastion van het type “Vauban”. In 1719 wordt de kerk getroffen door blikseminslag. De Kapucijnen besluiten om de kerk te wijden aan Sint-Donatus. Het klooster werd in 1796 definitief gesloten maar de kerk blijft bestaan. Er werden renovatiewerken uitgevoerd in de loop van de 20ste eeuw.
