Bornem is een plaats en gemeente in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen. Bornem behoort tot het kieskanton Puurs-Sint-Amands en het gerechtelijk kanton Willebroek.Het 'Land van Bornem' is als zelfstandige heerlijkheid tot stand gekomen in de periode van de plundertochten van de Noormannen . Strategisch gelegen aan de Schelde, op de plaats waar nu het Kasteel Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde staat , werd toen de ronde toren en de bijbehorende gebouwen opgericht, vlak bij de samenvloeiing met de Rupel en de Durme. Het Land van Bornem bestond toen uit de moederparochie Bornem met haar afhankelijkheden Havekesdunc en Hinken . In de 10de eeuw werd het land van Dendermonde herverdeeld en werd Mariekerke aan het Land van Bornem toegevoegd onder het beheer van de Heren van Bornem.
