Op 18 augustus 1914 moest koning Albert zijn leger noodgedwongen terugtrekken naar Antwerpen. Hij wilde de Duitsers echter niet zomaar vrije doortocht verlenen, en vanuit Antwerpen viel hij ze tot twee keer toe in de flank aan. Telkens lag Boortmeerbeek in de vuurlijn.
