Kalmthout is een plaats en Kempense gemeente in België in de provincie Antwerpen. De gemeente behoort tot het kieskanton Brecht en het gerechtelijk kanton Kapellen.Kalmthout was samen met Essen en Roosendaal vroeger een deel van de parochie Nispen en vormde later met Essen en Tongerloos Huijbergen een heerlijkheid. Deze heerlijkheid werd in 1157 door Arnold van Brabant aan de Abdij van Tongerlo geschonken. Vanwege het gevaar van wolven stond de bisschop van Luik de Kalmthoutenaren in 1338 toe een doopvont in hun kapel te houden, zodat ze niet met pasgeboren baby's naar Nispen zouden moeten. In 1513 werd Kalmthout een zelfstandige parochie.
