Hij is de enige in Vlaanderen, bouwjaar 1862 - 1863, verwoest in 1918 bij de aftocht van de Duitsers en snel hersteld om de drukke spoorweglijn Oudenaarde-Ronse-Leuze opnieuw berijdbaar te maken. De spoorwegtunnel heeft tijdens WO II één nacht gediend als schuilplaats voor Hitler zijn "pantsertrein". Op een winterdag in 1966 gleed een stuk van de Spichtenberg naar beneden tot over de spoorwegbedding, net voor de ingang van de tunnel, waardoor het treinverkeer Oudenaarde-Ronse meer dan één jaar onderbroken was.
