De stad telt ruim 5500 inwoners en ligt op ca. 275 m hoogte. De stad Limburg bestaat uit twee delen: beneden aan de rivier de Vesder ligt Dolhain, het industriële en commerciële centrum met zijn aan de spoorlijn Luik- Aken gelegen station Dolhain-Gileppe; op de rots hoog daarboven ligt de voormalige vesting Limburg.
