De grote markt toont u de welvarendheid van de middeleeuwse handelsstad Dendermonde met prestigieuze wereldlijke gebouwen als het Stadhuis en het Vleeshuismuseum, respectievelijk de voormalige laken- en vleeshalle.
In het stadhuis staan werken van de Dendermondse schilders tentoon. Meer informatie over de oudste geschiedenis van deze stad vindt u in het Vleeshuismuseum.

Naast de Grote Markt staat het imposante Gerechtshof. Hier stond tot de tweede helft van de 16de eeuw de burcht van de heren van Dendermonde. Daarna werd er een Karmelietenklooster opgericht tot dit in 1794 door de Franse overheersers afgeschaft werd.
