Het lijkt wel of je via de tunnel onder de N60, de viervaksweg die Gent met de Vlaamse Ardennen verbindt, de afslag naar de 19de eeuw hebt genomen. Of zoals de inwoners van Mullem zelf beweren: "naar het einde van de wereld". Mullem is een beschermd dorp dat tot een van de mooiste van Vlaanderen behoort. Het geeft een perfect beeld van hoe een dorp er de voorbije eeuwen uitzag. Sinds 1977 hoort Mullem bij Oudenaarde. De okergele huizen – het kleur van de lokale adel – fungeerde meer dan eens als filmdecor.
