Waar de vijver zich bevindt was er altijd al een laagte. Waarschijnlijk werd hier in de middeleeuwen een vijver voor viskweek aangelegd. Later werd de vijver uitgediept tot kasteelvijver en dan tot blusvijver voor de meubelfabriek (Hero) in de buurt (huidige terreinen Joris Ide).
Zorgvliet is een natura 2000-gebied, wat wil zeggen dat er waardevolle planten, dieren en hun leefomgeving hier op Europees niveau beschermd zijn. Daarom zijn de oevers van de vijver afgeschuind en worden ze natuurvriendelijk onderhouden. De licht hellende oevers vormen een mix van biotopen. Diverse borden geven je informatie over de bijzonderheden van de verschillende plekjes tijdens je wandeling.
