De IJzerenleen is volgens veel Mechelaars de Champs Elysées van Mechelen.
Gelukkig zijn er minder auto's te zien, maar wel imposante gevels, mooie winkels en een van de oudste stadhuizen van Vlaanderen. Vroeger stroomde hier tussen Dijle en Koolvliet een vlietje waarlangs een vismarkt plaatsvond. De IJzerenleen krijgt zijn naam door de ijzeren leuningen naast het vlietje, die er nog steeds staan. Nochtans werd de vliet al in de zestiende eeuw overwelfd.
De gevels uit de vijftiende, zestiende en zeventiende eeuw zijn niet origineel maar werden na een wedstrijd tussen architecten weer opgebouwd na de vernielingen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog.
