Op deze plaats stond eeuwenlang een kerkgebouw dat uitgroeide tot een bedevaartplaats rond het in 1596 aangespoelde miraculeuze Mariabeeld. Het was één van de oudste bedevaartskerken in de regio.
Kort voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd er reeds aan gedacht om de bouwvallige kerk te vervangen. Tijdens de oorlog werd de kerk volledig in puin geschoten.
In 1919 werd eerst een noodkerk geplaatst, daarna tekende het Oostendse architectenduo Charles Pil en Henri Carbon de plannen voor een nieuw neo-romaans kerkgebouw dat in 1923 werd voltooid.
Het kerkje met het Mariabeeld is nog steeds een bedevaartsoord voor vissers uit de buurt. In de glasramen worden vele mirakels afgebeeld die toegeschreven werden aan het mirakelbeeldje.
