Wellicht omstreeks 1100 werd op de plaats van de marteldood van Godelieve een abdij van benedictinessen gesticht. Volgens de legende werd de abdij opgericht door Edith, de dochter uit het tweede huwelijk van Bertolf. Zij was blindgeboren, maar kon zien toen zij haar ogen waste met water uit de put waarin Godelieve werd verdronken.
