Jena was een centrum van wetenschap en letteren aan het eind van de 18de-begin van de 19de eeuw. De bakermat van het Duitse idealisme en de Duitse romantiek. De universiteit was een van de beroemdste van het land. Aan de universitiet van Jena werkte ook de dichter en toneelschrijver Friedrich Schiller. Je kan hier in Jena nog steeds zijn buste zien staan. Schiller was tevens een goede vriend van Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, die ongeveer 25 km verderop woonde in Weimar. Hier in Jena woonde ook de broer van de beroemde wetenschapper Alexander von Humboldt.
