Hammershus is Noord-Europa's grootste kasteelruïne. Het kasteel op Hammeren, het noordwestelijke deel van het eiland Bornholm, is nu tot ruïne vervallen. Aangenomen wordt dat het rond 1255 door de aartsbisschop van Lund Jakob Erlandsen werd gebouwd. Vóór de bouw schijnt er reeds een vluchtburcht te zijn geweest, die Jakob Erlandsen uitbreidde.
In 1265 werd de vesting veroverd door de Deense koning Erik V Klipping, maar elf jaar later in 1276 weer aan de aartsbisschop teruggegeven. In de daarop volgende jaren speelde Hammershus onder het bewind van de aartsbisschoppen Jens Grand en Esger Juul een belangrijke rol in de machtsstrijd tussen de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk en het Deense koningshuis.
