De Rijnslenk is een inzakkingsgebied tussen de Vogezen en het Zwarte Woud. Het lijkt also de Rijn hier een enorme vallei heeft uitgeschuurd, maar dat is niet zo. De Rijn stroomt in de slenk die ingezakt is. Ten Westen ligt het hogere blok (geologen noemen dat een horst) dat ten opzichte van het inzakkingsgebied (de Rijnslenk) hoog boven de omgeving uitsteekt.
