De Loire is, met een lengte van 1.006 kilometer, de langste rivier die volledig door Frankrijk stroomt. Ze ontspringt aan de zuidzijde van de berg Gerbier-de-Jonc in het zuidoosten van het Centraal Massief in het departement Ardèche, en mondt uit in de Atlantische Oceaan via een estuarium gelegen in Loire-Atlantique, in de regio Pays de la Loire. Het verloop is eerst van zuid naar noord tot in de omgeving van Briare in het Loiret, en daarna naar het westen.
