Het was hier in 1798 dat Napoleon met zijn leger vertrok voor een invasie van Egypte. Er waren maar liefst 200 wetenschappers mee met de troepen om zeer opportunistisch van de gelegenheid gebruik te maken om "informatie" te verzamelen in Egypte. Eén persoon die ook mee wou was de beroemde wetenschapper en ontdekkingsreiziger Alexander von Humboldt. Hij probeerde via Marseille hen te vervoegen, maar dat lukte niet.
