In de Tower was er ooit een dierentuin. Historicus Harry De Paepe: "...de traditie van dieren in de Tower begon eigenlijk al in de 13e eeuw. Toen kreeg de toenmalige koning van Engeland op een gegeven moment een olifant cadeau. Omdat hij niet wist wat te doen met dat dier, gaf hij het dier onderdak in de Tower."
