Een wandeling door het verleden van deze grootstad kun je het best aan St. Pauls Cathedral beginnen (metro St. Pauls). Bij de grote brand in
1666 viel haar voorgangster ten prooi aan de vlammen. Daarop kreeg Sir Christopher Wren de opdracht een nieuw, nog fraaier godshuis op te trekken, iets wat hem warempel gelukt is. Met haar imposante, beschilderde koepel is St. Pauls de mooiste kerk van de stad. In 1675 werd de eerste steen gelegd en de daaropvolgende 35 jaar volgde Sir Christopher elke vrijdag de vorderingen op de voet. Terloops tekende hij ook de plannen voor 50 andere kerken in Londen. Op zijn 78ste levensjaar beleefde hij zijn grootste triomf: zijn zoon plaatste de sluitsteen in de koepel van de kathedraal.
