In het Firenze tijdens de Renaissance waren heel wat rivaliteiten. Zo konden Leonardo da Vinci en Michelangelo elkaar niet luchten, ook al was er een leeftijdsverschil van 23 jaar. Er is een verhaal gekend dat Leonardo op een dag deze Piazza di Santa Trinita overstak toen men hem stopte en zijn mening vroeg over enkele obscure lijnen van Dante. Op dat moment liep Michelangelo voorbij. "Hier komt Michelangelo" zei Leonardo. "Hij zal het je uitleggen".
