Ferrara ligt aan de Po di Volano, een zijrivier van de hoofdstroom van de Po. Vanwege zijn schoonheid en culturele belang is de stad door UNESCO aangemerkt als werelderfgoed. Ferrara is de hoofdstad van de provincie Ferrara. Vanwege zijn belangrijke historische betekenis werd Ferrara in 2006 de zetel van het Italiaanse Hermitage Museum. Het is de vijfde stad ter wereld die verbonden is met het Russisch Museum. Uit deze verbintenis is de Stichting Hermitage-Italië ontstaan.
