Pompeii en Herculaneum hebben precies hetzelfde historische lot ondergaan: ze zijn tegelijkertijd vernietigd door dezelfde gebeurtenis, nl. de uitbarsting van de vulkaan Vesuvius. De twee steden liggen dan ook zeer dicht bij elkaar. Maar Pompeii is een veel populairdere plek. Pompei krijgt maar liefts negen (!) keer meer bezoekers dan Herculaneum. Is het zoveel interessanter? "Neen" is het antwoord. In feite, men zou zelfs kunnen beweren dat Herculaneum een betere plek is om te bezoeken. Het is een kleinere plaats, en dus makkelijker te begrijpen, sommige details zijn beter bewaard gebleven en, ook, het is veel dichter bij de stad Napels. En toch...
