Het hertogdom Urbino werd geannexeerd als provincie van de Pauselijke Staat na de dood van de laatste hertog Francesco Maria II della Rovere in 1625. Daardoor was het Palazzo Ducale van Pesaro in 1655 de residentie van kardinaal-legaat Luigi Homodei. Hij ontving koningin Christina van Zweden tijdens haar reis naar Rome. Tegenwoordig wordt het paleis gebruikt als het belangrijkste stadhuis.
