Voor het voormalige ziekenhuis van Santa Maria en gescheiden van de kathedraal door de kapel van de Maagd Maria werd gebouwd in 1493 ter vervanging van de oude die dreigde te ruïneren, zoals blijkt uit de inscriptie op de basis van de toren. Een soortgelijke klokkentoren gebouwd ten tijde van kardinaal Giovanni dei Medici in 1482 naar een ontwerp van Sansovino, bevindt zich in Bolsena in het heiligdom van de heiligen Giorgio en Cristina: het is waarschijnlijk dat de Volterrans vroegen om het ontwerp voor hun klokkentoren samen met de opdracht van het doopvont dat zich in de doopkapel bevindt en dat Sansovino met zekerheid werd uitgevoerd in 1502 zoals we in dezelfde bron lezen.
