Bij aankomst op Mauritius op 29 april 1835 was Darwin onder de indruk van de beschaving en welvaart van de Franse kolonie die onder Brits bestuur was gekomen. Hij verkende het eiland en onderzocht de vulkanische bergen en de koraalriffen. De landmeter-generaal, kapitein Lloyd, nam hem mee op de enige olifant van het eiland om een verhoogd koraalplateau te bekijken.
Mauritius was het enige bekende leefgebied van de uitgestorven dodo. Toen Charles Darwin het eiland bezocht, waren de dodo's al een eeuw uitgestorven.
