Onderzoek in Etosha National Park van de biologe Caitlin O'Connell toonde aan dat er iets merkwaardigs was met de zintuigen van olifanten. Het viel haar op dat als een olifant iets opmerkte in de verte, dat de olifant de poot schuin hield en de grond raakte met de nagels van de poot. Ze raakte overtuigd dat de olifant probeerde vibraties op te vangen via de grond en met de pootnagels kan "horen" of er een kudde olifanten aankomt.
