“Voor pampus liggen” is een lievelingsspreekwoord, stamt uit de tijd van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC). Anno 1600 en 1700 zeilden Nederlandse driemasters over de zeven zeeën met specerijen, zijde, zilver, thee en godweetwatnog aan boord. Terug thuis waren de schepen te zwaar om door de ondiepe geul in de Zuiderzee tot in Amsterdam te varen. Voor Pampus liggen, en wachten tot de rimram naar kleine bootjes was overgeheveld, was het ellendige lot van de bemanning. Iedereen stonk, was moe, wilde alleen nog zeep, drankjes en een wulps wijvenlijf. De VOC leverde daarom spandiensten tot aan Pampus, praktisch en prettig.
