Het rivierengebied omvat de stroomgebieden van Rijn, Maas, Waal, Ijssel en de Vecht. Op het Europees continent zijn er weinig plaatsen waar zoveel water langs gevoerd wordt als in dit gebied. Met dat water komt ook veel materiaal dat opgelost is in het water. Aan het einde van de laatste ijstijden waarbij ook massa''s smeltwater materiaal meesleurden kreeg je hier een prachtig voorbeeld van vlechtende rivieren die zich een weg zochten in hun eigen afzettingen. Van dit vlechtend patroon kan je nu nog restanten zien langs de Maas bij Cuyk.
