Het Amsterdam Internet Exchange, kortweg de AMS-IX, opgericht in 1997 speelt een essentiele rol in het web. Deze organisatie, met inmiddels vijf locaties in Amsterdam, ontwikkelde zich vanuit het Sciencepark tot het belangrijkste internetknooppunt van Nederland en zelfs het grootste ter wereld.
In het Sciencepark bevindt zich het Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI), een instituut dat in 1946 is begonnen als het Mathematisch Centrum. Vanaf 1970 was daarvoor een supercomputer beschikbaar: SARA (Stichting Academisch Rekencentrum Amsterdam), een samenwerkingsverband tussen de Vrije Universiteit, de Universiteit van Amsterdam en het CWI.
