Vlieland is vanuit het westen gerekend het tweede bewoonde Nederlandse Waddeneiland. Het ligt in de provincie Friesland maar behoorde tot 1942 tot de provincie Noord-Holland. De gelijknamige gemeente omvat naast het eiland ook een deel van de Waddenzee. Ten zuidwesten van Vlieland ligt het eiland Texel en ten noordoosten ligt het eiland Terschelling. Van de vijf Nederlandse Waddeneilanden heeft Vlieland de hoogste duintop: 45 meter hoog.
