Het ligt ten zuidwesten van Oudega en ten zuidoosten van Koudum ter hoogte van het meer de Oude Keren/De Holken . Het dorp vormt een tweelingdorp met Oudega. In 2021 telde het dorp 50 inwoners.De plaats werd in 1398 als Kolderwout vermeld, in 1412 als Colderwolde en in 1505 als Coldewold. De plaats is ontstaan bij een moerasbos dat bij Koudum was gelegen. Het dorp is nooit groot geweest. Het dorp heeft wel een kerk gehad, eentje zonder toren maar in 1840 is deze afgebroken en is alleen een bosje terug te vinden op de plek waar de begraafplaats was van het dorp.
