Het complex is vooral bekend van het langebaanschaatsen, ijshockeyclub de Heerenveen Flyers en Shorttrack Club Thialf . De naam Thialf is afgeleid van Thialfi, de snelvoetige knecht van Thor, de Germaanse god van de donder.
