Ten zuiden van Wijlre, waar de Geul en de Gulp samenvloeien, ligt kasteel Cartils. Het ligt idyllisch tussen landerijen en bossen. De naam Cartils betekent ‘bij een hof (curtis) behorende’ en lijkt te duiden op een hoge ouderdom. Rond het kasteel vormde zich gedurende de eeuwen een klein buurtschap.

Het kasteel moet van oudsher een burcht met voorburcht zijn geweest. Een opzet die herkenbaar is op een tekening uit 1613. In 1883 werd het kasteel grondig verbouwd. De nog aanwezige gracht moet toen zijn gedempt en de grote serre aan de voorzijde werd aangebouwd. Ook de tuin werd aangepakt en in landschappelijke stijl veranderd.

In de 20e eeuw werd het kasteel het onderkomen van het geslacht Janssen de Limpens en momenteel heeft het nog steeds een woonfunctie. Het kasteel is daarom niet openbaar toegankelijk. De tuin is in de jaren tachtig in zijn oorspronkelijke staat hersteld.
