Groot-Ammers wordt in de geschiedenis voor het eerst genoemd in 1042. Het in die tijd gebouwde slot Liesvelt was een van de grootste en sterkste kastelen van Nederland. Het slot was het eigendom van de heren van Liesvelt. De omgeving Groot-Ammers, het Achterland, Graafland, Peulwijk, Ottoland en Peursum stond onder invloed van deze heren.
In 1636 kocht Willem-Frederik van Nassau, stadhouder van Friesland, de baronie van Liesvelt. Onze koningin mag zich om deze reden Barones van Liesvelt noemen.
