Het rijtje huizen aan de Oranjestraat was ooit onderdeel van ‘de Engelse Stad’. Niet dat hier ooit een stad heeft gestaan, het was een bijnaam. De huizen waren bloksgewijs door de VSW gebouwd voor de werknemers. Engelse monteurs, die in de 19e eeuw bij de VSW werkten om de overgang op stoom te realiseren en in deze wijk werden gehuisvest, vormden waarschijnlijk de reden om deze wijk Engelse Stad te noemen. De nog bestaande huizen werden in 1953 gerenoveerd waarbij o.a. de bedsteden werden verwijderd.
