De Hondsrug is een langgerekte zandrug in Drenthe en Groningen, gevormd tijdens de voorlaatste ijstijd door enorme ijsmassa’s die ruggen en beekdalen in het landschap uitsleten. Het gebied is rijk aan hunebedden, grafheuvels, oude esdorpen en veenkoloniën, waardoor geologie, archeologie en cultuurlandschap hier sterk samenkomen.
Geopark De Hondsrug is een UNESCO Global Geopark dat dit unieke landschap en zijn ontstaansgeschiedenis als centraal verhaal gebruikt. Het geopark wil het geologisch erfgoed beschermen, de geschiedenis zichtbaar en beleefbaar maken en tegelijk duurzaam toerisme en regionale ontwikkeling stimuleren. Bezoekers ontdekken er ijstijdlandschap, prehistorische monumenten en traditionele Drentse dorpen via routes, musea en educatieve activiteiten.
