De 'Slag om de schaduw', door A. Korthals Altes beschreven in het gelijknamige boek, speelde zich af op het grondgebied van de gemeenten Asten, deurne, Nederweert en (toenmalig) Meijel. Nadat de 7e US Armored Division tegen een Duitse overmacht had standgehouden, was het aan de 15e Scottish Division om samen met de Amerikanen het buitengebied te zuiveren van Duitse militairen. Bij die gevechten verloren vele honderden militairen het level. De Deurnese kerkdorpen Liessel en Neerkant betreureden daarnaast tientallen burgerslachtoffers. In 1992 is in Liessel dit waardige monument opgericht voor alle oorlogsslachtoffers.
