De Maeslantkering is het paradepaardje van we waterbouwkundige kennis van Nederland en vormt ene onderdeel van de Deltawerken. De constructie werd gestart in 1987 en duurde tot 1997. Elke arm van de Maeslantkering is ongeveer zo lang als de Eifeltoren. De deuren sluiten bij stormweer. Indien deze deuren niet in staat zijn een westerstorm tegen te houden, zitten meer dan 1 miljoen Nederlanders in Zuid-Holland met natte voeten. Bij een voorpelling van een storm dat tot een waterpeil van 3 meter boven het NAP komt worden de deuren automatisch afgesloten.
