Elvas ligt op nauwelijks 8 km van Badajoz. De stad werd gesticht door de Romeinen, met de naam Alpesa. Tijdens de reconquista viel de stad eerst in 1166 in de handen van de koning van Portugal, maar daarna weer in de handen van de Arabieren. Uiteindelijk werd de stad Portugees in 1126. Sinds 1570 heeft Elvas een bisschopszetel. De stad speelde een belangrijke rol bij de grensoorlogen in de 17de eeuw.
De zomers zijn hier heet. Ze halen hier zonder moeite 45 graden in de schaduw.
Elvas is een echte vestingstad. De vestingen zouden de best bewaarde uit de hele wereld zijn.
