Das Tor befindet sich auf der Piazza del Duomo in Pisa.
Das Tor wurde 1562 vom damaligen Herzog von Florenz, Cosimo I. de' Medici, in den bereits bestehenden mittelalterlichen Mauern geöffnet und ist als Neues Tor bekannt, da es neuer als die ursprüngliche Porta del Leone und die Porta Santa Maria als Eingang zu der Porta Santa Maria ist Domplatz.
Während des Ersten Weltkriegs verlief vom Bahnhof San Rossore ein Gleis, das mit einer Öffnung neben dem Tor direkt in das Krankenhaus von Santa Chiara führte, um die Verwundeten von der Front zu transportieren. Diese Öffnung besteht noch.
In den 1930er Jahren wurden die beiden Seitenbögen geöffnet, um Fußgängern einen sicheren Durchgang zu ermöglichen, da die Linie 1 des Straßenbahnnetzes von Pisa vorhanden war, die den Hauptbahnhof mit der Piazza Duomo verband.
