A few weeks before the corn harvest, this field was transformed into a labyrinth in 2018, on the occasion of 120 years of the Vlezenbeek National Guild. In September during the large Corn Maze event of Landelijke Gilde Vlezenbeek you could try out the labyrinth. Impressive is how this was made. A chat with the creator of this impressive maze taught us that it was not made with advanced GPS technology, lasers or theodolites, but through a technique that navigators used centuries ago to navigate the sea and chart their path: dead reckoning or fermented cutlery. The route was carefully drawn on a map/aerial photograph. From the outset, it was counted how much distance one had to travel before turning left or right. And that in units of 30cm because that is the distance between 2 rows of corn. This combination of distances and directions relative to the starting point was then neatly noted and executed in the field. At the start, it was always counted how many rows (or distance) one still had to do and then turn left or right. Did you know that the first navigation systems also used this technique? Positioning with the GPS was used for initial positioning. From there, the rangefinder in the car was used and a digital compass / or the difference in rotations between the left and straight wheels to determine the change of direction. This way one could know where one was. Occasionally, GPS positioning was used for verification and calibration. So hats off to the builders of this maze.
