Meppen, also known as the "green city by the water," has a population of almost 35,000. Located in the Emsland region, Meppen is known for its numerous rivers and canals and 373 km of cycle paths. It's a modern city with few historical sites and a limited shopping area, yet it's still a popular tourist destination. Many pleasure boats, cyclists, and walkers can be seen. In 2010, the 650th anniversary of its city charter was celebrated.
