The Saalfeld/Saale district prison is a former prison in Saalfeld/Saale. The building is now used as a city archive and is protected as a historic monument. In colloquial language, it is often called "hat box" due to its distinctive architectural form.
The tower-like circular building was constructed as a prison according to the plans of the Meiningen master builder Carl Rudolf Tröger from 1857 to 1859, costing 14,500 guilders. On November 25, 1859, it was handed over as a district prison to the Duchy of Sachsen-Meiningen. The last execution took place in May 1917, but after Germany's capitulation and the occupation of Saalfeld by the Red Army in 1945, executions were still carried out. Due to bombings, 22 out of 43 prisoners were granted leave in April 1945.
