Ships that departed from places on the former Zuiderzee anchored on texel to sail in favorable winds to the Baltic Sea countries, France, Spain, Portugal and later also East Indies.
In order to protect the ships that lay before texel, William of Orange took the initiative to build fort De Schans. The Schans was built around 1574.
In 1811 Napoleon visited De Schans. He had the fort enlarged and fortifications were built west and east of De Schans: Lunette and Redoute.
Around 1930, the Lunette, the Redoute and part of De Schans were excavated to use the soil for dike reinforcement. Fort De Schans has now been restored in parts. It has been reduced as much as possible to the situation of 1813.
