Septiembre de 1419 no fue un mes agradable para los habitantes del prinsehof. Jean de Thoisy, obispo de Doornik, recibió la ingrata tarea de informar sobre el asesinato de Juan sin Miedo a su hijo, Filippo de Charolais o Filippo el Bueno. Juan sin Miedo fue asesinado a sangre fría el 10 de septiembre de 1419, durante su encuentro con el delfín en Montereau-Fault-Yonne. Y esto sucedió en el puente sobre el Yonne, en los límites de la antigua ciudad de Montereau en Francia.
Su hijo, Filippo el Bueno, que vivía con su esposa Michelle de Francia en el Prinsehof en Gante, no tenía idea de lo que sucedía. Era nada menos que el hermano de su esposa quien había asesinado a su padre. Este drama familiar es impactante. Nunca volvería a haber paz entre el marido y la mujer. Cuando Michelle murió algunos años después, Filippo el Bueno envió su gato a la funeraria de su propia esposa.
