Die Stadt liegt an der Pleiße, am Rande des Westerzgebirges auf einer durchschnittlichen Höhe von 340 m ü. NN, im Westen des Erzgebirgsbeckens und östlich des Landschaftsschutzgebiets Werdauer-Greizer Wald. Die nächstgelegene größere Stadt ist Zwickau , die nächsten Großstädte sind Chemnitz und Gera in Thüringen.
Angrenzende Gemeinden sind Fraureuth, Langenbernsdorf, Lichtentanne, Neukirchen und Zwickau sowie Mohlsdorf-Teichwolframsdorf im thüringischen Landkreis Greiz.
