Lisseweegs Vaartje

The Lisseweegs vaartje is an old waterway between Bruges and the sea. Initially, between the sea and the village there was the "olievliet" and between Ter Doest and Bruges the "Lissewegeree". These two watercourses were connected at the beginning of the 13th century by a dug canal, right through the village mound, which in some places rises 4 meters above sea level! The canal was initially used as a supply road for the Tournai bluestone during the construction of the church and abbey. Later also as a trade route to Bruges and to the sea. In Zwankendamme - formerly Swaenendamme - there was a lock and a transfer. A date stone can still be seen Anno 1773. There are three stone bridges over the canal: the Tiendebrug, the Heulebrug and the Roelandsbrug. During the summer months, there are thousands of flowers along the banks, about 35 different species.
