La disfida di Barletta fu uno scontro tenutosi il 13 febbraio 1503 nella mattina di Sant'Elia , fra tredici cavalieri italiani e altrettanti cavalieri francesi. Il confronto finì con la vittoria degli italiani.
Ancora nel XXI secolo si può osservare l'edicola con l'epitaffio che Ferrante Caracciolo, I duca di Airola, fece erigere nel 1583. Il monumento fu recuperato nel 1846 a cura del Capitolo metropolitano di Trani. Nel 1903 vennero aggiunti i versi di Giovanni Bovio.
